Classic lashes were once the most popular extension type, but now, many different types have entered the scene. Classics, Hybrids, Volumes, and now Mega Volumes – which do you choose? Of course, to know which is the best type of lash extension for you, you must first understand the differences between them. So let’s start there.
Types of Lash Extension:
1. Classic Lash Extensions
Classic lash extensions are lashes that can make your eyes pop. They are applied in a 1:1 ratio, meaning they have applied one extension per individual lash. These lash extensions come in various thicknesses and styles and give you a range of options regarding how you want the result to look.
2. Volume Lash Extensions
Volume lashes are the fuller, fluffier version of classic lashes. Instead of applying 1:1 lashes (like with classics), multiple extensions are fanned out and applied to each lash, giving the wearer a fuller, more dramatic lash effect.
3. Hybrid Lash Extensions
Want something more dramatic than Classics but not quite as dramatic as Volumes? Go with Hybrids! Hybrid lash extensions combine both Classic and Volume Lash extensions and are applied in a 70:30 ratio.
Types of Volume Lashes
Okay, so now we know the difference between the three main types of lashes – let’s focus a little more on Volume Lashes. There are three different types of volume lashes – Russian, American, and Mega Volume. Here are the differences,
1. Russian Volume
Russian Volume is the original type of Volume lashes. In this type of volume lash, 3-5 extensions are bonded together and applied to a single natural lash. Depending on how many extensions are bonded together, these can be referred to as 3D, 4D, or 5D fans.
Each extension is designed to be 1-2 mm longer than the natural lash that they are being applied to. In addition to making the lashes look complete, they also give the appearance of a liner along the top lash line.
2. American Volume
American Volume Lashes are applied more staggard and unevenly, giving a more textured appearance and are more natural than the Russian Volume Lashes. At the same time, it still gives much more Volume than classics or hybrids.
3. Mega Volume
Mega Volume Lashes are precisely what they sound like – they’re designed to give you mega Volume. 6 or more lashes are applied to each lash with Mega Volume lashes, making them thicker than even the Russian Volumes. They are typically longer than Russian volume lashes, giving them a dramatic volume effect.
Which Type Of Volume Lash Extensions Should You Choose?
Well, it depends on which type of look you are going for. All types of Volume Lashes have different benefits associated with them.
If you’re looking for a more dramatic lash effect, Russian lashes may be a good choice for you. With that being said, many people feel like the Russian lashes are “too dramatic” and often don’t look natural.
If you want a more natural look, we suggest the American Lashes. These give you total Volume (more than the classics) but still give a more natural lash look.
Mega Volumes are the most dramatic lashes you can get if you’re going for shock value, and they will provide a packed Volume and the most extended lash.
With that being said, there’s nothing natural about them. So if you don’t want people to know you’re wearing lashes, mega lashes probably aren’t the answer.
How long Will My Volume Lash Extensions Last?
Again, this depends on what type of Volume lash you choose. You should expect your volume lashes to last somewhere between 4-6 weeks. That being said, this can vary greatly depending on your natural lash cycle.
Most people will find that they need an infill every 2-3 weeks for any volume lashes, especially those with Russian Volume lashes. Because of how Russian volumes are applied, your lashes can look very sparse and unnatural when they fall out. American Lashes tend to look more natural when shed, giving you more time between fills.
Regarding Mega Volume lashes, one of the main downfalls is that you will need fills more often. Mega Volume lashes can leave mega gaps in between lashes when they fall out, so you’ll need to have them filled more often.
Your Natural Lash Cycle
How long your Volume lashes last will depend on what type of extensions you choose, but it will also primarily be based on your lash cycle. In other words, how long your lashes last will depend on how often your lashes naturally fall out. The shorter your lash cycle, the shorter time you will have before needing a fill.
How Long Do Volume Lash Extensions take to apply?
Aside from being more natural-looking, another advantage of American Lashes is that they take less time to apply. A complete application of American Volume lashes takes about 2 hours. On the other hand, Russian Volume can take upwards of 4 hours for a complete application, and mega lashes may take even longer.
Why Choose Volume Lash Extensions Over Classic Lash Extensions?
We’re not going to lie to you – volume lash extensions aren’t for everyone. Some people might prefer the more natural look of classic lashes – and that’s okay! We love our classic lash extensions too! But there are some advantages to choosing volume lashes, or people wouldn’t wear them. So what’s all the fuss about? Why do people love their volume lashes so much?
The main draw to volume lashes (no surprise here) is the Volume. While classic lash extensions look great, many people don’t feel that they give their eyes enough stunning look! Well, volume lashes will do that! With 2-6 times more Volume than classic lashes, volume lashes are more dramatic.
And while many people are turning to volume lashes, we find that they are in high demand among those attending special events like proms, weddings, and other ceremonies are all the perfect times for the stunning look that Volume lashes provide. Clients with short or thinning lashes may also prefer the volume lash look because it can help to fill the lashes better than the classic lash look can.
Can I Wear Mascara With My Volume Lash Extensions?
Sure, you can do whatever you want – but it’s not recommended. Your lashes will give a voluminous look without mascara, and mascara will only damage the appearance of your lashes. Remember, the whole point of Volume extensions is that you don’t need to wear makeup anymore, and this is an added advantage of one more minor step in your makeup routine!
Will Volume Lash Extensions Damage My Natural Lashes?
When appropriately applied, Volume lashes should cause no damage to your natural lashes. However, improper application of the lashes or the adhesive could result in unwanted damage. We always recommend using a qualified, experienced, certified professional to apply Volume lashes. A trained technician will know how to properly apply your extensions so that no lash damage will occur.
To further prevent lash damage and keep your extensions looking new, it’s also essential that you follow any aftercare instructions provided by your technician. Things like avoiding water for 48 hours after your application and avoiding oily products on your lashes are essential steps in keeping your lashes volumized!
